League Thoughts
As Mint has evolved, so have our priorities.
Creating a successful league system that people want to attend is one of these new priorities.
So far this year’s Summer League has already exceeded expectations.
Disc Nation and Another Round have joined the party.
Mint, Disc Nation, Another Round, Austin Beerworks, and Live Oak Brewing.
Five companies here in Austin that have made disc golf their priority this summer.
That’s a community working together.
The summer is also usually the slowest time for disc golf retail.
This year we swapped Bart for Zilker.
This week Zilker hit 90 players.
Sprinkle has hit 78 on back to back weeks.
Live Oak has been steady at 40, 48 and 49.
Surprisingly, Circle C and Roy G have been the slowest.
Is this because it’s on Monday and Friday? Does the weekend get in the way? Is it traffic?
We have also had to deal the threat of rain more at both courses.
I am hopeful to see these courses tick up in player count soon.
They are consistently two of the most popular courses for tournaments. So it’s been kinda weird that they aren’t that popular for league.
It’s also great to get to see the same players every week.
Some of them come back to see if they can beat their score last week.
Some of them are only there for the aces.
I’ve seen new friend groups formed.
We get people who are trying out tournaments for the first time.
This is what Austin golf felt like in 2010-2015.
All the disc golfers played together.
The city wasn’t as segmented and divided by growth.
You knew what 30-40 people you might run into at Pease.
Covid killed a lot of that community. We just stopped gathering like we used to.
We don’t all have to agree on everything.
But we can go play disc golf together after work.
We can check scores and text our buddy who just hit the $1000 ace pot.
Disc Golf is so focused on growing up.
I am going to keep trying to grow it out.
