Forward Momentum
The last two years I have felt like I needed to disappear after the big show.
Mint always sacrifices a lot for me to be involved in DGPT.
Every year I delay other tasks to make this a priority for the business.
That’s just how disc golf is.
I watch a lot of people and businesses go through the same cycle.
Most just leave. Some persist.
All in. All out. Is this worth it?
This sport is still a hustle.
Always has been.
It’s slowly transforming itself into a business.
Norms are changing.
Talent is improving.
Industry experience is a valid thing now.
We’re gonna make that new store the most badass one in the world.
We’re going to try some new ideas.
About 6 years ago Mint pivoted to events, tours, and courses as the demand increased.
That all lead to DGPT and Sprinkle
We invested time and resources into a lot of other projects around the way. The money we made during the boom went right back into the community as much as we could.
I wouldn’t change a thing about those decisions.
Now players and consumers want quality over quantity. They want real.
It makes sense.
We have made an effort to focus in on Mint, Sprinkle and HOTT going forward.
Those products can get better. They need to.
With all due respect to everyone I have worked with, I just didn’t understand how much of my Mint time I had been giving away to make those things happen until I started to pull back.
I still feel like I can’t get rid of projects fast enough.
We just have to better at business first and foremost. Most of my failures have come because business and friendships crossed too many lines.
Mint has focused on improving our disc options and new retail store. Using two factories has vastly improved our available options and ability to fill up the store.
Plus the Pickle is our best selling disc now.
Guys been great at keeping me more focused. I appreciate it more than I’ll probably ever tell him in person. He lets me be me until it’s a problem for Mint. It’s honest.
HOTT has gotten easier. Having Prodigy as a partner has made it easier to have limited edition drops at events plus improve the player value.
The HOTT schedule was mostly left alone for the first time ever aside from the DGPT squeezing into May.
I’ve contracted Goose Promotions to direct a lot of the events for me. They’ve been amazing to work with.
The transformation from Zach trying to run everything himself has been quietly happening.
HOTT needs to be better though. It just takes time and a little more elbow grease.
The recent upgrades at Sprinkle were fun for do again. I’m excited to do more soon. I feel like I have enough bandwidth to work on the course again. My goal is to get it to the point that the course is always looks DGPT ready.
One Hole at a time I think though. Where should I start?
Oh. The new store.
We added room for over 3000 more discs. It will house the old blue stamp machine that was previously owned by Disc Nation and Millennium. Those two companies are my roots. I worked at Disc Nation and played for Millennium.
Those two companies were goals of mine 15+ years ago. Work there. Play for them. Consumed.
Adding a piece of my past to my present means a lot to me.
I can see my entire career in that machine. Ole Blue and the years I spent pressing the buttons…man…that machine is now my entire career in one piece of steel.
So you know why I’m not burned out?
This stuff makes me happy.
I have more things to accomplish.
Things I want to do for Mint.
I am not burned out because I’m really starting to love my job again.
There were a lot of things I expected to be better at. It’s been nice to limit my focus and do what I’m already good at.
Good things are happening.
Make them great.
Let’s tackle a fun project on the course Friday.
