The OB Open is my personal retort to the the environment presented at PDGA events.
The players non-stop questions to things already answered.
The tee time requests.
The rule change requests.
The minimal sense of camaraderie.
The anxieties people can’t seem to let go of.
The OB Open naturally happened as part of my response to the way disc golf is.
We encourage heckling.
We encourage the card to work together to score well.
If you suggest a dumb rule or have a silly question, I will make a rule just for you.
I also talk a lot of trash to the players.
I try to get drunk usually too.
My goal is to be the opposite of what you normally expect at events.
We don’t offer refunds that have a valid reason.
It’s a winner take all event.
This whole circus is done this way with goal of wiping away the anxieties.
Show the players that if they trust the TD, you can still have a good time even when the rules are absolutely insane. That by going through the OB Open chaos with other players, you can form new bonds and strengthen friendships.
The OB Open is the one event we run where the point is to let go. Wipe away all your fears. Your anxiety. Your insecurities.
Everyone else is dealt the same deck of chaos.
It’s one of those events that means a lot to win but is probably more memorable to just experience.
I am really excited that this years event immediately follows COTO on Memorial Day.
We started using Memorial Day last year for a couple of reasons.
1) Most people are off work that holiday(Monday) and school is out.
2) Live Oak isn’t busy that day. So it makes operations easier for everyone.
3) The overall mental expectation is different when it’s a holiday. People just have more fun on a “free from work” day.
The rules for this year draw inspiration from past years and The Game(an OB Open spinoff which I run at Sprinkle).
I plan to go absolutely crazy with OB this year. It will be the hardest one yet.
I’m also going to create some Hazard areas for the first time at the OBO.
The caddie book isn’t published until Monday morning.
There are minimal visual queues like flags. No maps.
You just have to let go and play.
Throw a disc at the basket and accept the lack of control we are giving you..
Deal with the anxieties. The distractions.
Thats the OB Open.
See you all next Monday.
The most fun event in Austin. Glad I have some new people joining to experience the fun for the first time this year.
