Forward Momentum (Day 35 of 365)

Forward Momentum (Day 35 of 365)

We are finally settled in at Sprinkle Valley.

We have been here for a little over 2 years now. The first 6 months were focused on building out the warehouse, store, and half of the course. We finished off the first year by finishing the entire 18-hole layout and hosting US Women's.

This is all on the top of my mind because I am sitting here in the store today. I get time to think now. I decided to hold down Tuesdays in-store when we started opening 7-days a week around the holidays last year.

I wanted to work Tuesdays because I needed a day where my only distraction was the customer. Work can't pull me out of the store when I'm here. I get time to talk to customers. I can work on event and store planning when the store is empty.

Overall it has been a lot of fun for me to get in the shop and talk to people again. When I run the merch tent at Mint I am usually also the TD, so I have dual duty. It feels a lot like my old days at Disc Nation. Friends come by and hang out. They can grab a drink from Austin Beerworks too. It's really cool to sit back and remember those days at Disc Nation dreaming about "what I would do if I had a store".

And then it hit me...

Mint has a store.

I need to start doing those things I dreamed about. We need to implement more of the ideas we always talked about.

I need put my money(and time) where my mouth is.

First up, better merch. More merch. A home for everyone?

I think we always knew we couldn't just carry Mint in the store. Last year we added Elevation, MVP/Axiom/Streamline, and Innova.  This week we added Trash Panda. We will have Climo Discs soon when they release their discs for wholesale.

We do have limited shelf space though. So while I can't stock every brand, I want to focus on a mix of brands that people want and also those that I think you should be aware of. So MVP & Innova seem like good starting points for brands that everyone throws.

Elevation used to be based out of San Antonio, and they have a really unique product with discs made out of silicone and rubber instead of plastic. Climo Discs...well that hopefully crosses a few checklists for people. It's the Champ, it's Discraft. What's not to like about that?

Are there any other brands that you want to see at Sprinkle?

Next, we have to improve the signage & tweak the layout.

These are things we just did not have time for. The in-store setup also was limited by the fact that we only sold Mint. Once we started to fill in the shelfs with these other brands, the picture became more clear in regards to what we need to improve and change.

Being in the store on Tuesdays has also helped give me a great perspective on all of this. I get to see what customers do and don't like. I see what discs make it to the register. We get to talk about their questions and find the disc for them.

So I'll be working on updating a lot of the store signage soon to make pricing, branding, models, and flight charts more visible in-store.

We now play the Stamp Machine Stream in store too.

Guy will be stamping and streaming most weekdays going forward.

When? Good question...We are figuring that out still.

The schedule and exact times each day will likely be sporadic. He'll probably even do some "after dark" streams once the Bullets hit the queue. Which is very soon...

This whole streaming project was another idea we put on hold until we get to this point. We needed the warehouse, and store and course to be fully operational. It had to be close to dialed in before we could another wrinkle to this thing.

Now we can start having some fun with what's here.

Guy knows how to put on a show too. If you know the "Taco" personality from the early 2000s...expect a lot of that again.

We'll offer Twitch and Youtube to start. These are totally free to watch, but if you'd like to login and give us a follow we'd certainly appreciate it. Instagram and Facebook will likely be used at times too.

So Mint can finally breathe. Just a little.

Great Discs. Best factory in the world. Sprinkle Valley. Austin Beerworks. The Team. The Staff. The City.

All of it rocks.

Now what do we do with it?

We will make it the best we can.

We will master it.

We will not waste the opportunities we have worked for.

Sprinkle Valley and Mint have to be the best they can be.

Our feet are planted firmly here.

Let's enjoy it. Love it. Be it.

Until tomorrow.

  • Love the innovation pouring out this year!

I’m always down to do another batch of dyes for the store!

Also very interested in signage design! 👀👀👀

  • I’d love to see H13 discs in the store! Another local (San Antonio) company with the goal of growing the sport the right way. As much as I loved the idea of mint and mint alone in a store, it’s not a great business plan (for a brick and mortar; diversity sells and sales pay the bills). Love the evolution while keeping the community and structure in tact, love the blog. Love Mint

  • Sprinkle Valley truly is a special and unique place in our world of Disc Golf. Seeing the changes in such a small time has been a true pleasure to witness/experience. I cannot wait to see what the future has to hold.
