The 5am blog

Todays plan for The Open:

  1. Mow some stuff around 7am
  2. bathrooms show up at 8am
  3. String the OB
  4. Clean up greens and boxes
  5. Make final tree trims
  6. DGPT meetings
  7. Afternoon course walk for a final Friday punch list

We are so close now.

I’m also way more used to the process this year.

I know FPO enjoyed the course last year. I’m so nervous for what MPO thinks. A lot more people will be watching.

If you think teeing off at Hole 1 on Sprinkle is nerve wracking…try running the event.

Dealing with anxiety is the job. Yours and mine.

In the back of my head I’m telling myself to not play into the negative feedback some folks will inevitably have.

My inability to ignore that in the past has caused Mint problems at times. I care a lot. I’m always super defensive of the people around me.

Last year I got incredibly frustrated with the “journalism” in this sport. Not really with DGPT or PDGA.

I was furious with the independent podcasts and other news outlets. The ones who claim to be promoters but are really just hate watchers. The days of researching a topic before you make a podcast seem long gone.

Last year was the first time I really ranted on a public stage about how I felt about it all.

A lot of these outlets had opinions and had never set foot on the property. Never talked to anyone at Mint.

But they willingly shit on things our community had worked on for years.

At times you’ll see me poking these outlets on Facebook or Reddit because of how much this bothers me.

I cant stand knowing that there are people in disc golf that profit from the negativity and hot takes.

I’m lucky Mint trust me to talk like I do.

These outlets get to benefit from the hard work others are doing. A lot of people put their life on hold to make these events work.

Then when the event comes these news outlets put a lot of effort into criticizing things like trophies, crowd size, weather and payout. They find the things that are wrong just to have some click bait topics.

I guess enough fans like that type of content because these outlets keep making it.

Just sucks that it has a place in this community. This type of content also doesn’t do anything to attract new players and resources to the sport. None of it’s done in a way to get this sport help. It’s done for clicks and subscriptions. To make money of other people’s short comings.

It divides the sport.

So you bet I’ll defend it.

I am all for independent media with their own opinions too. I don’t want to restrict anyone.

But there’s a fine line when it comes to the intent behind it all.

Time to get to work.

  • Today was my first time to play SV and visit the store and adjacent brewery. As a long-time Texan and Austinite (current Pflugervillian), I’m delighted there is such a great joint venue in my backyard. “Bobby Trees” behind the counter was friendly, knowledgeable, and genuine. Anyone from the online world who hasn’t visited the course or had 1st hand experience of the scene/feeling of our community is only guessing at best (hot takes at worst.) I’m excited for next week and feel confident your work will be recognized. I’ll be there for the JM practice round and at least one day of SV play. Best of luck!

  • 1) unfortunately, this way of creation/consumption/thinking is everywhere. i think it’s important for us individually, and as a society, to realize that 90% of what we see/hear online is just here to generate engagement, whether positive or negative. We should do our part to avoid and not engage with easy clickbait stuff. Easier said that done.

    2) uhh that might be it. i’m so excited for next week!

    3) it wasn’t it it—— for those reading, a reminder to do things in real life!

i think we’re conditioned now to check online to see what randoms say about something to see if it’s good or not. i understand it can be helpful, but you don’t have to live by it. If any part of you thinks trying out the DGPT might be fun—- do it! If you have friends that like disc golf, tell them to go! Especially for those in Austin, you are so lucky to have such an awesome event here within the city. I can guarantee you it’ll be an experience.

  • Love the mentality. Proving the haters wrong. I can’t wait for The Open and the course is looking AND feeling so much better than it ever has! Great work on it.
