Here’s some prep notes because I know 99% of the The Open at Austin field won’t see this…

The wind for Monday and Tuesday practice is from the south.

The head wind was ripping on Hole 1 as a result yesterday. Plus it makes the holes in the field pretty manageable(11, 12, 16-18). The wind will take you where you need to go.

On Wednesday and Thursday though we start to get the wind from the North. It’s also going to be pretty calm on Thursday.

This changes Sprinkle a lot. The wind is a bigger factor in the woods than people know when the leaves haven’t popped yet. That little lift and turn players got in practice will be gone, especially on hole 1.

I’m sure most will be able to power through it, and that’s why they are the best in the world. It’s their job to be great.

On Friday we will return to the Monday/Tuesday wind. It will start to pick up and hit 15+ mph too.

A few pros already expressed concerns with 11 & 18 as expected. These designs are a little different but they reward high skill shots and execution.

Sprinkles teeth show up when you miss the obvious gaps.

When you don’t execute the game plan. If you get out of position, the course gets really hard.

Hole 18 is the ultimate test of this.

150ft to a small island that makes you throw over a small mound.

It’s a stock shot for every touring pro, buts its very uncomfortable. It’s not easy to get in perfect position. The mound makes players aim up a little. Takes away the hips.

The course will reward the best in the world.

The ones that can take what the course gives them.

Go be the best in the world.

Don’t let the course win before Round 1.

Time to fill up some water and ice.

Until tomorrow.

  • Haha. But the 1% doing color commentary will read it! That’s exactly what my notes said. You’re the man! Thank for the back up and added insights.
